What Doctor Should I Go To For A Preconception Visit?

Hubby and i are planning on TTC in May. We both want to get checked to make sure we are healthy and don’t have medical issues that could cause problems. My question is, should we go to my family practitioner or should i go to the health department (where i go for my annual Pap smear), or both?

I was told that I should schedule a preconception appointment with my gyno before I begin trying to conceive. She said no exam was needed but that I could come in for counseling if I had questions. Can anyone tell me what their gyno had to say in such a visit? I know the basics, like getting my folic acid, no caffeine, alcohol, etc. Is there anything else I should know? And does anyone happen to know why doctors prefer that you wait three months after coming off the pill before actually trying to conceive?
