Trying To Get Pregnant
Trying To Get Pregnant

While some women seem to be able to get pregnant without even trying, for others it might seem like an impossible dream to be able to start their own family.

More women than you might think have been saying “I cant get pregnant” or “Why cant I get pregnant”, luckily the ones who ask why may find the reasons for their perceived infertility and be able to enjoy the miracle of birth and find out how and when to get pregnant!

The first thing a couple needs to know about getting pregnant is a woman’s menstruation cycle. It consists of four different phases:

The Menses (The Periods)

Lasting from 3-5 days this is where if the egg has not been fertilized the walls of the womb falls away and is passed out the vagina.

The Follicular Phase

This is where a new egg of formed in the ovaries and takes from day 10 to 14 before it is released and the womb has been repaired.

Ovulation

This is the time when the egg is released and travels down the fallopian tube to the womb; this takes about 5 days from days 10-14

The Luteal Phase

At about day 14 after the start of the menses the body starts to release progesterone which is used to keep the embryo alive and can help with continuing pregnancy. This cycle lasts till the 28th day when it starts to break down and the menses period starts again.

From this we can see that in a 28 day cycle (approximately) there are only some fertile points when the egg is ready and waiting to be fertilized. During the Ovulation period is considered the most fertile times and from day 10-18 is considered the peak fertility period and the best time to get pregnant.

Each woman varies somewhat on these times but after 18 days the womb is degrading and cannot support a pregnancy and before that there is no egg to fertilize. It is also important to notice that Sperm can stay alive in a woman’s womb for up to 5 days giving a period of time similar to the woman’s fertile times.

Now this may be common knowledge to many people but it is important to get these times right if you want to give your pregnancy the best chance it can get! Try to keep a menstrual calendar so you can keep on top of when is the most fertile times. On top of this it is also helpful to make love as many times as you can during this fertile period so that there is as many sperm as possible trying to fertilize the egg at any point in time, however try not to make it a chore!

Another tip is to lie down after making love for at least 5 minutes, do not get up and do things or go to the bathroom, let the body settle and it gives the sperm more chance. Also your diet may make a big difference to your chances such as too much coffee, smoking, possibly even prescription drugs you are taking, try to live as healthily as you can.

Hopefully if you keep to this your cries of “Why cant I get pregnant!” can turn into “Hooray it is baby time!!” now that you know when to get pregnant!

Yes you can get pregnant during your period, but your chances of getting pregnant during your period are slim. The best time for a woman to get pregnant is around the middle of her cycle, close to ovulation. For the average woman this is around cycle day 12 to 16. However, it is possible to get pregnant during your period and there are several reasons why.

Getting Pregnant During Period

Sperm can live for up to 5 days
Normally sperm can survive inside a woman’s body for around two to three days. However, under the best conditions, sperm can sometimes survive for as long as five days. So if a woman had unprotected sex during her period and then ovulated four or five days after she had sex, she could get pregnant.Early ovulation
Typically a woman ovulates around 14 days before the start of her period. So if you have an average 28 day cycle, you would most likely ovulate on cycle day 14. A woman’s cycle, though, is not always predictable. Even women who normally have regular cycles can have an off cycle and ovulate earlier or later than normal. If you ovulate very early in your cycle, for example, on cycle day 10, it would be possible to conceive if you had intercourse while on your period.

Long periods or irregular bleeding
Some women have very long periods or irregular bleeding after their period. If a woman had a long period, say it lasted for 10 days, and she had unprotected sex while she was still bleeding, she might get pregnant. Even though a woman is bleeding or spotting, it doesn’t mean she is not fertile. It is possible for a woman approaching ovulation to still be on her period. In fact, some women will begin producing fertile cervical mucous during the last few days of their periods. If a woman ovulates shortly after her period ends or while she is spotting, she could get pregnant.

Ovulation Spotting
Ovulation spotting is bleeding that occurs close to ovulation. It is very fertile cervical fluid and it is sometimes mistake for a long or abnormal period. Some women will have brown or red spotting right before they ovulate. This type of spotting provides the ideal environment for sperm to live in. If a woman has sex while she is having ovulation spotting, there is a good chance she could get pregnant.

More and more couples who have been practicing birth control with the help of the rhythm method feel totally flummoxed when they suddenly find themselves heading towards unexpected parenthood!

Were they not led to believe that getting pregnant after ovulation was not feasible? Then how did this happen?

The answer is very simple. Each woman’s menstrual cycle is different from the other. So the released egg is very viable and has chances of getting fertilized within 12 to 48 hours if it comes in contact with a sperm. Of course, this does not happen with everybody since each woman is again different in this regard. So then, is getting pregnant after ovulation possible? Yes, it definitely is!

To explain this is in greater detail, let us take an example. The couple has indulged in sexual intercourse on a Sunday. The woman begins ovulating on Tuesday. Since sperms are able to survive in a woman’s body for up to five days, there is every possibility that if one of them were to come in contact with the egg (provided it is still viable), conception is going to occur.

So the sperm is the deciding factor where getting pregnant after ovulation is concerned! If the egg is not viable, this does not occur.

Earlier, women were advised to indulge in coupling just a few days prior to ovulation and continuing till the actual day of ovulation. Today, quite a few doctors express the opinion that sexual intercourse before, during and after ovulation will give positive results.

They even go as far as suggesting that three days of sexual intercourse during the week would ensure getting pregnant after ovulation! Going in for sex every alternate day is advised because the male body must have time to build up the supply of sperms.

Even medical experts have come forward with changed views. They believe that the period after ovulation is the best time to conceive. It is difficult to predict the exact date of ovulation and how long the egg is going to remain viable as each woman’s body is different. So getting pregnant after ovulation is a more believable theory today.

Another factor to be considered is that the time of ovulation can vary in the same woman’s body, month after month. She is not able to foretell the exact date of her menstrual cycle. Even women who have had systematic and regular periods all their lives might find their bodies misbehaving some time or the other!

This is because various factors come into play to delay the normal ovulation period-ill-health, excessive stress, indulgence in too much of physical activity and so on. Thus, there is hope for disappointed couples yet-getting pregnant after ovulation is a reality!
